Relationships Education and Health Education became statutory in all primary schools in England in September 2020. This statutory curriculum builds on the non-statutory lessons that schools have previously taught in Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).

One of the most distinctive features of a Catholic Relationships and Health Education programme should be the emphasis placed on the vital role that parents have in nurturing and educating their children in these matters. As part of our statutory RHE curriculum, we value the opportunity to work closely with parents and carers and to keep them informed about our programme, its content and the resources we use.

As a Catholic school, Jesus Christ remains central to every aspect of school life. All pupils are educated in the beliefs and devotional practices of the Catholic Church. Our vision is to support the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all our pupils, rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Church.

The education of children in human sexuality is an important, precious and privileged responsibility. The Church teaches us that this is very much a partnership with parents, in which parents are the ‘first educators’ of their children on these matters. We recognise that parents and carers have the primary responsibility for the education and formation of their children, and our role is to work alongside them.

As a Catholic school, we use Life to the Full, the Diocesan programme for Relationships and Health Education in Catholic schools. Developed by Ten Ten Resources, the programme provides a comprehensive and age-appropriate approach to Relationships and Health Education, rooted in the teachings and values of the Catholic Church.

Ten Ten is a Catholic educational organisation with considerable experience in supporting Catholic schools in this area. Life to the Full provides a programme of Relationships and Health Education for Catholic primary schools and supports schools in delivering the statutory curriculum within a Catholic context.

Through the programme, Ten Ten recognises the foundational role that parents have in educating and nurturing their children in these matters. The programme includes resources which help to keep parents and carers informed about what is being taught in school, while also providing opportunities to engage children in discussion, activities and prayer at home.

Parent Consultation and Information

We recognise the importance of working in partnership with parents and carers. We therefore provide information about our RHE programme and encourage parents to familiarise themselves with the content and approach.

Ten Ten provides an online Parent Consultation Tool, which gives parents an overview of the programme and explains:

  • The statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education.
  • A vision for Catholic Relationships and Health Education.
  • How Life to the Full supports schools in fulfilling the statutory curriculum within a Catholic ethos.
  • Information about key areas of the programme.
  • Answers to frequently asked questions.

Ten Ten also provides an Online Parent Portal, which can be used throughout the year to keep parents and carers informed and updated about the work being undertaken in school.

Programme of Study

Ten Ten’s programme for Catholic primary schools, Life to the Full, teaches Relationships and Health Education within the context of a Christian understanding of human sexuality, rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Catholic Church.

RHE is a statutory subject for all primary schools in England. We aim to give pupils the knowledge and understanding that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, while supporting them to develop positive attitudes, healthy relationships and respect for themselves and others.

We deliver this teaching through the prism of Catholic Relationships and Health Education. The framework of the programme is informed by the Catholic Education Service's approach to Relationships and Sex Education and is designed to support Catholic schools in delivering the statutory curriculum within their Catholic ethos.

Life to the Full is a fully resourced Scheme of Work in Relationships and Health Education for Catholic primary schools. It embraces the statutory curriculum and uses a spiral approach to learning, in which pupils revisit important themes at age-appropriate stages throughout their school life.

The programme includes teaching about personal health, physical and emotional wellbeing, strong emotions, private parts of the body, personal relationships, family structures, trusted adults, growing bodies, puberty, periods, life cycles, the potential dangers of social media, where babies come from, an understanding of the Common Good and living in the wider world.

The entire programme is underpinned by a religious understanding that our deepest identity is as a child of God – created, chosen and loved by God.

The programme is fully inclusive of all pupils and their families.

The programme includes:

  • Age-appropriate lesson plans from EYFS to Year 6.
  • High-quality videos and resources created by Ten Ten specifically for UK-based Catholic primary schools.
  • A programme of prayer and worship music to accompany the scheme of work.
  • Assessment activities.
  • Guidance for programme coordinators.
  • Teacher training and professional development.
  • Programme pathways for a variety of school timetables.
  • An Online Parent Portal to support links between school and home.

Working in Partnership with Parents

We recognise that parents and carers have a vital role in supporting their children's personal, social, emotional and spiritual development.

Our aim is to work in partnership with families so that children receive consistent, age-appropriate and supportive messages about relationships, health, wellbeing, personal safety and growing up.

If parents or carers have any questions about our RHE programme or would like further information about the content being taught, please contact the school.
