Swimming

At St Gregory's  we are committed to ensuring every child becomes a confident and capable swimmer. Children in Years 3–6 take part in swimming lessons at Fenton Manor Baths as part of the National Curriculum Swimming Programme.

Swimming is not only a vital life skill,  it also builds confidence, fitness and resilience, and we’re proud to help every child on their journey to success in the water.

Please ensure that your child has a towel, a one-piece swimming suit/tight trunks, swimming cap for all girls and boys will need to wear one if their hair is long. If your child needs to wear goggles, a note needs to be written to give permission for this; however, please note that when your child completes their National Curriculum Swimming Award, they will not be allowed to wear these.

The children will be taught the following in their swimming lessons:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
  • Use a range of strokes effectively [front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke].
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
